Small Axe welcomes original essays of between 500 to 8500 words. The journal also welcomes artwork and mixed media pieces.

WRITTEN ESSAYS
Style: In general the style of manuscripts conforms to The Chicago Manual of Style. Exceptions may be considered where an author provides a written justification. The journal typically uses American spelling though British spelling is also acceptable if the author so chooses. Caribbean Creoles are also acceptable provided they are accompanied by suitable glosses or translations. The style guide used by the journal can be accessed by clicking here: style-sheet

Format: Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate, double-spaced throughout, including footnotes. Times Roman at 12 point is preferable.

Permissions: Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission to reprint any material not covered by "fair use" (text, illustrations, images, etc.). If you have questions please consult the editor.

VISUAL ESSAYS
Artwork and visual essays for the journal should be submitted as photographic prints with accompanying captions or other text where necessary. The author should provide an indication of preferred layout. Visual materials in electronic form may be sent to this email address: sximages@smallaxe.net accompanied by a written notice to this email address: sxessays@smallaxe.net
If images are to be returned a self-addressed, stamped
envelope must accompany the submission.

BIOS
Authors of manuscripts or artists of artwork accepted for publication will also be asked to send in a short bio of no more than 80 words which should include information about location (institutional, geographical, etc.), and publications or exhibitions.

CONSENT TO PUBLISH
Authors of manuscripts or artists of artwork accepted for publication will be asked to sign a "Consent to Publish" form. This form should filled in, signed, and returned to the editor.
