Small Axe is a peer-reviewed journal of criticism, primarily concerned with thinking in and through the regional and diasporic Caribbean. We welcome original scholarly essays, interviews, fiction, and poetry of up to 7000 words. The journal also welcomes artwork and mixed-media pieces.
WRITTEN ESSAYS
Style: In general the style of manuscripts conforms to The Chicago Manual of Style. Exceptions may be considered where an author provides a written justification. The style guide used by the journal can be accessed by clicking here: Style Guide.
For English submissions, the journal typically uses American spelling though British spelling is also acceptable. Caribbean Creoles are also acceptable provided they are accompanied by suitable glosses or translations. For purposes of consistency, Small Axe has developed a lexicon of frequently used words which can be accessed by clicking here: Lexicon.
Format: Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout. Times Roman at 12 point is preferable. The journal uses footnotes for references.
Manuscripts should not contain any information about the author. Please include name, email address, phone number and, if applicable, institutional affiliation with the accompanying abstract and bio (see below).
Permissions: Contributors are responsible for obtaining written permission to reprint any material. Similarly, it is the responsibility of contributors to supply the source of all previously published material.
GUIDELINES FOR MANUSCRIPTS WITH IMAGES/ILLUSTRATIONS/ARTWORK
If a manuscript with visual images is accepted, the author is expected to provide reproductions for the essay. All photos/images/illustrations must be supplied as digital files at 300 dpi [JPEG, EPS or TIFF]. Please supply largest files possible.
When submitting the manuscript, the author should recommend both color and black-and-white illustrations and submit photocopies of all illustrations, as well as a caption list (format below). Images should be referred to in the text as "(Fig. 1)," "(Fig. 2)," etc.
Request for Permissions: All copyright permissions to reproduce images in both the print and electronic editions of the journal must be cleared and if necessary paid for by the author. It is also the author's responsibility to include acknowledgements as stipulated by particular institutions. Authors of accepted articles should utilize the following letter: Request for Permission.
A copy of the full set of reproduction permissions must be submitted with the final version of the article. Small Axe cannot publish images without these permissions.
Captions: Captions should include all elements specified in the letter(s) of permission from the rights holder, institution, and/or photographer, but generally should be supplied in the following format. [Please note: captions in Small Axe must distinguish clearly between a copyright in an artwork and a copyright in a photograph of an artwork (where the artwork may or may not be in the public domain).]
Small Axe includes full caption information, whenever available and appropriate, in this order: Figure number with colon: Artist name, Title (in italics), date, medium on support, dimensions (h. x w. x d.), name of collection, city of collection, other collection information such as "gift of . . . ," accession number, etc. (if applicable), copyright or credit-line info regarding both the photograph and the artwork (in parentheses)
Artist, title, date, medium, and dimensions are separated by commas, and these elements are followed by a period. Collection, city, and credit lines follow, separated by commas. After this, in parentheses come all copyright and photograph credit lines. There is no terminal period, unless the basic caption information is followed by a descriptive sentence, which is only permitted in exceptional cases. Not all images are of works of art or other objects, and therefore not all of the above data can be included for every image.
Sample Caption: Figure 1: John Hans, The Merchants, 1833, oil on wood, 81.5 in. x 82.48 in. National Gallery, London (photograph provided by James Smith, Kingston)
